After the death of her mother, Rowena Walden moves to Stoatley Manor to live with her uncle and aunt. Life takes a strange turn when Rowena starts to work as a clerk for Sir Richard Hastings, the highly unpopular Sheriff at Eaglestone Castle. The heart of darkness is a book that is hard to put down once you turn the first page, you are curious to find out what happens next. Odelia Floris is extremely talented at writing historical fiction. The story is set in 1430 and even though I am not qualified to point out any inaccuracies, she brings the era to life with skill and conviction. I liked Rowena’s character; she to me represented women throughout history who have stood out because of their strong characters. Overall, it has all the ingredients to keep the reader entertained.

The Heart of Darkness The Chaucy Shire Medieval Mysteries Book 1 edition by Odelia Floris Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It has been some time since I have read a historical romance and I must say I wasn't disappointed. This story is well written and the characters are interesting. I found myself wanting to know more about them. I also was rooting for both of the main characters in their quest to become more than what they were seen as by others. I will most likely read this book again and tell friends about it. Thanks Odelia Floris for a great read.
I enjoyed this storyline..Everything is included Hate..Anger..Jealousy..Love..Honor..AND, HUMOR!! It has it all and then some!! Thanks for a very enjoyable read!!
Outstanding!! I was sorry to see the book end. Thank you for writing such a wonderful story/book.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the next!
The author claims to enjoy working in several genres and in in the scene where Rowena and Richard are alone until the cabin it is most evident. Here the word hard is overused.
The book requires line editing.
Just enough handsome knights, just enough mystery, just enough romance. This is a romp through medieval England that will delight your soul.
This is a charming, entertaining tale set in England in the days of Henry V. I love historical fiction, so this was right in my wheelhouse. The heroine is, of course, plucky and brave. The ill-tempered sheriff has a tragic past, a dangerous present, and, of course, a heart hidden away under his doublet. The mystery has appropriate urgency. And, of course, love conquers all. The tale meanders a bit, but in a pleasant way, like a good, long walk. It is well-executed, though it doesn't focus overmuch on historical accuracy if that is important to you. If you like your escapist fun with horses and swords and ladies with tokens of favor, then this is the book for you. I very much enjoyed it.
This book was not like any I have read before. The characters were flawed people with very real issues who found the strength to do what was right! The mystery was well crafted and the descriptions of the area, events and people was quite epic in scope. I was captured by the story and appreciated that there was no graphic violence and it is a clean romance. I am glad to know that here will be more stories, I cannot wait to find out what happens! Excellent read!
