This is a “take no prisoners” book! Gritty, sexy, scary ... Darcy Daniel sucks you in, turns you six ways from Sunday, and spits you out and all you can say is ‘Whew! What a ride!” This is one fine book, and she is one fine writer.

Nina, wife of Michael, and their son, Sam, are two of the main characters, and they are in grave danger. Sam, being the child that he is, has no inkling that his father is turning him into “mini me” – a heartless and depraved misogynist. Nina and Sam are running for their lives ... Nina, because she knows she will be dead if caught, and if then, she fears what Sam will become at the hands of his father (and his Uncle Greg).

Nina is the victim of her childhood, her abandonment, and her previous lifestyle that led her to end up with Michael. And do. not. get. me. started. on Greg! Monsters have been described in many books; Monster Greg takes the cake.

A third main character, Case, becomes a rescuer for Nina and Sam. His back story ties in with the plot of this book. Trapped on the relatively small island of Tasmania, being chased by evil people as well as by duped police, the tale of Nina and Sam and Case will keep you enthralled until the very last word.

Don’t miss this heart-pounding novel.

The Devils' Cradle Darcy Daniel Timothy Poulton 9780992400408 Books Reviews

I love any book that can really engage me and this book delivers! I finished this book in one sitting (Well, sometimes I was cooking or doing laundry while reading. You know how we bookworms are ;).

First, I will tell you that I just do an over-all analysis of the experience I had reading a book to help others choose. So, no spoilers. The plot was admirably well-crafted. The storyline pulled me in right away. Each chapter added to my curiosity and kept me flipping pages.

The characters are multi-faceted and the layers are added in nicely. Some tugged at my heartstrings, some are frightening in their realistic diabolic nature lying beneath the surface mask. The plot is tight and paced quite well. As I wrote earlier, it's a page-turner.

It has great elements that explore the human condition. There are a few misspellings and some typos, if one wants to nitpick. I don't, because I enjoyed the book tremendously. I recommend it to those who like thrillers or are looking for a compelling read. So, 5 stars from me. )
Full of tense energy and suspense. Fast paced from the first page. I really enjoyed this book. It contains a lot of graphic sexual violence and strong language so if you are not okay with either, I'd highly recommend not reading this. I enjoy dark stories so this was a good read for me. The only downfall for me was that at times I found the story to be predictable. The story is kind of a "drama", may not appeal to male readers (my husband couldn't finish it. He didn't like the violence against the female lead and prefers books with supernatural elements vs drama.). The characters are very easily relatable. I specifically loved the two brothers.. They had such a weird relationship. They weren't like any other characters I've read about before! Intriguing to say the least! Also, as a mom, it is very easy to relate with Nina and her situation. If you like dark, fast paced books, give it a chance, you won't be disappointed!
This book - a psychological thriller - is the story of hair-raising spousal abuse, of a man deliberately teaching his young son how to abuse females, and of a woman who believes she is as worthless as her husband says, but has had enough anyway. It is also the tale of an ex-cop who is searching for the man who murdered his wife, It turns out that Nina, the abused wife and Case, the ex-cop, have a common enemy or two. Case's efforts to keep Nina safe on the 26,410 sq mi island of Tasmania with the police force (and therefore the airport and port) controlled by one of their adversaries and the rest of officialdom by the other, trigger a spine-tingling chase. And Nina's 9 year-old son Sam, who adores his father who in Sam's eyes can do no wrong, becomes an additional threat to their safety.
On a deeper level, the reader sees how Nina begins to realize her worth as her husband, frantic to secure her return, loses his charismatic cover and his evil streak becomes apparent. It is definitely worth reading!
I liked the thriller parts better than the romance parts. I didn't buy the romance between Case and Nina, it was way too much too soon, especially considering it had been only a couple of days since Nina escaped.

Between Greg and Michael, Michael was the more interesting villain of the two. Greg was just over the top. How did no one on the police force see through him? Michael was much more subtle about it, but then again, Nina was really the only person he seemed to enjoy terrorizing.

I know that Sam was just a kid, and was only responding to the environment he grew up in, but I really wanted someone to smack some sense into him. The way he treated Nina was appalling.

The story was paced well, and the author did a good job of building the suspense. The chapters were short, and gave four POV Nina, Michael, Greg and Case. I agree with some of the other reviews that the brutality was hard to stomach, but it didn't seem gratuitous. I do like that the background of Michael and Greg was given to highlight why they were they way they were, not that anything could justify that kind of behavior.

The ending was pretty much what I expected, but kind of abrupt.
