This copy of this book was bought for my granddaughter. When I was young ( in the 1940's) my original copy was on a high shelf and came down every Sunday. First my father read it to me. Later I began reading under the pictures and later still I read the entire book. Not only did it instill a love of reading, but also and intense love of travel. I am so excited that it is still available. I have visited most of the places in the Occident and some of the places in the Orient. I hope my granddaughter loves it as much as I do. My 3 grandsons were given a copy just before the entire family went to Greece and to Crete. I certainly helped them enjoy the trip.

I loved this book as a child. I wanted to find a 1941 copy to share with my Grandson. Many of the 1941 copies were misbround so I was a little apprehensive, but this one was perfect. It was as advertised. A little worn, but not badly. The cover was torn but at least it had a cover. The was an inscription on the inside where a girl had given it as a Christmas present to her brother in 1943, which I found touching.

A very good experience for me.
As I have previously mentioned I am collecting all of his books for a daughter-in-law who became interested in Richard Halliburton when she found in her father's collection of first editions and other well written books which she had inherited several of his books. I am enjoying rereading them. He considered one of the best travel writers. As a Memphis (TN) as was he and living in his era I followed him as he took his adventurous trips. If you like travel his books are a must.
I remembered this book from when I was a child--about sixty-five years ago. I dreamed of all the places that I never thought I'd get a chance to go to - especially Petra. Well, in 2012, my husband and I visited Petra! This book is a gift for my twelve year old granddaughter who is interested in ancient history. It was wonderful to be able to find a copy of this out-of-publication book and in such great condition!
I read this book at age 16 and parted with it a year later. No other book ever came close to being as pivotal as this one in influencing my choice to spend the bulk of my working life as a travel writer. Years after having read it, I sought out many of the places Halliburton had brought to my attention as a teenager. You can perhaps imagine how pleased I am to have the chance to peruse it again after 52 years.
This book enchanted me 50 years ago and it still does! Even though the author addresses the reader as "boys and girls", I am not offended! His marvels enchant me. I have now seen many of them and will see four more of them next month!
I had read this book when I was young; my father had a copy he'd kept from when he was in high school. Alas it was heavily worn and water-damaged over the course of the years so I was very excited to find a copy for my own.

The book is classic travel-adventure from the late 30s. The first part details travels in the Occident, and the second part, the Orient. It is written as a father might write to his son (or daughter -- it's a bit dated, after all!). Reading as an adult, you might find the tone condescending if you don't bear in mind the audience he's writing for. It's written in the first person and has a large number of photographs and illustrations throughout.

Reading this some 70+ years after it was written it comes across not just as a travel book, but in many ways it captures a world that's long gone. Some of the places mentioned were later ravaged by World War II or other calamities.

I read this book while still in grammar school and remembered for the next 60 years many of the world's wonders Halliburton wrote about. His adventure under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, written long before Indiana Jones, stirs the imagination as do many of his other descriptions of far away places. Knowing what to look for, I have been able to take advantage of business trips to visit local "marvels" identified in Halliburton's book.

The price of the book ($60) was a little more than I had hoped to pay but perhaps not too much for a good copy of an out-of-print classic. Anyway, the book was worth it and after reading it again, I gave it to my granddaughters for their library anticipating that it would give them a desire to see some of the great marvels of our time and enrich their lives as it did mine for decades.

Due to the era in which the book was published, the pictures are in black and white, which could turn off younger folks who are accustomed to color illustrations. But after reading one adventurous tale, the good readers will be hooked.
