Mia Sheridan is a wordsmith. She continually impresses me with the way she crafts a story, the way she weaves an intricate web of love and hope and devastation and societal awareness. Preston’s Honor was another in a long line of Mia’s books that opened my eyes to a side of life I’d never considered, never even given a second thought. That ability is one of the things I most admire about her writing. One of the best parts of Mia Sheridan’s writing is her characterization. Each character, no matter how different from myself, is easily relatable. There is never a time when I can not find some incredibly relatable part of them. This held true for both Preston and Lia in this book. While I had never experienced the abject poverty Lia had, I had felt the shame of being a burden to the only friends I had. I, much like Lia, have also continually not stood up for myself no matter how much I should have. Preston, while incredibly stoic, also had the inability to speak up for the things he needed, though his desire stemmed from doing what he considered honorable.
This book was so much more than I thought it was going to be, I was intrigued by the synopsis, but it in no way did justice to all the things this book was. From exploring the worst parts of human nature by demonstrating how people decide who a person is by nothing more than what they see on the outside, to plumbing the depths of what can happen when a person has no support and no way to reach out for the help they desperately need, Mia touched on many of the primal fears we all experience. She showed us how bad they can get and then turned around and showed us how to combat those fears and how to become more than what we ever thought we could be because we were strong enough to fight for ourselves.
While Mia Sheridan never fails to tell a beautifully poignant love story, because her books are far more than a romance novel, it is always the other lessons, the extra parts of life she adds that speak to my soul. She sheds light to the ugliest parts of life with a grace that is uncommon and wildly powerful. I love knowing, each time I open one of her books, I will be left a more compassionate and understanding person. There is no greater gift an author can give her readers than a heart that is more open, more tender, and a soul that longs to make a difference, however slight, in the world around them.

Lia and Preston's story is my favorite Mia Sheridan book since Kyland! Emotionally powerful at every turn, this story will tug at your heartstrings like you wouldn't believe.
Lia a wonderful young woman who has grown up very poor. The daughter of a immigrant single mother, she knows she is very different from most of the kids at school and tries very hard to 'live within her parameters'. Thinking she'll never be good enough for her childhood crush, she spends a lot of time being silent and staying out of people's way.
Preston is the son of a respectable farming family who once employed Lia's mother. He's been in love with Lia since they were children but so is his twin brother, Cole. Cole and Preston may look exactly the same but they couldn't be more opposite. Fun and gregarious, Cole is the life of any party whereas Preston is more quiet and very serious.
The story goes back and forth between present time and revisits memories of the characters childhood which perfectly sets up the predicament they find themselves currently in. I won't give away any more of the story but a few things this is NOT a love triangle, there is a wonderful social message about being an immigrant in this country (though this is not a political message, simply a humanitarian one), and you WILL cry!
I felt every emotion possible while reading Preston's Honor. I laughed a little, my stomach bottomed out in pain, I cried, I got mad, just everything! Lia and Preston are perfect for each other. The chemistry between them is palpable and watching them work through their relationship was both beautiful and painful.
I thought the end of the book was completely perfect and I had such a hangover when I finished. I can't recommend this story highly enough. Once again, Mia has given us beautiful characters and an amazing book filled with hope and love.
