I don't know if it's a compliment, but I enjoy a book when I feel like I'm watching a movie while I'm reading. This is a funny book and more remarkable because it depicts the challenges of a veteran returning from war. I could easily picture the main character and her grandmother as the quirky people in a drama/comedy on film. All the characters are rendered with humor. It's fun to read and tugs at your heart. And any book that so fully depicts the character of a dog automatically gets my vote.Tags : Granola, Mn [Susanne Aspley] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This book is so funny! I am glad I read it instead of listening to while driving because I would have driven off the road. Great small town characters people this book and it is a delight to read.
Granola, MN Love and War in a Nutty Little Town
Susanne Aspley
WTF Press 2016
Growing up in a small town surrounded by eccentric misfits and well-meaning misanthropes, Allison Couch somehow managed to keep her sanity and well-grounded sense of reality. Having survived a personal childhood loss, she was content to live the simple small town life working in the same hardware store she started at in high school. Eschewing the need to ever even getting a drivers license, she often served as the rock of stability that the others in her small orbit of family, friends, and small-town acquaintances relied upon in their swirling lives of make-do with what you can.
The town itself, nutty little Granola, MN retains most of its small town insular culture despite slowing becoming an ex-burb to the fictional county seat of Grimoire and the nonfictional teeming metropolis of St Cloud about a half hour down the interstate. And in this little cradle of Americana Allison was happy in her settled life living with, and more and more caring for, her libertine grandma who, between an onset of early stages of dementia, and an attitude of who gives a damn anymore, has thrown social decorum out the window. Allison was surprised one typical morning when a stranger who at first glimpse seemed to out of place, because he was African American, came into the store for some furnace parts.
For both it was a life-changing encounter. Toby had just moved to town with his mother, a newly hired school administrator in the area. Allison’s boss, part of an active veteran community in town made no secret that a decorated war veteran was moving to town and their excitement to welcome him into their ranks. It was at-odds with Toby’s hope that a small town solitude might help him quiet the demons that his war experience have implanted within him. Hoping that small town solitude might help him quiet the demons that his war experience has implanted within him.
Although both her and Toby were slow to realize that their quick friendship was destined for love, for others it was all too obvious. Although most of the town didn’t care about Toby’s race, such issues arise in a small town where two young people are finding the love neither sought but both badly needed.
I admit to reading this in small bits then going back to it like a treat I horded because I didn’t want it to be over. Lord knows, I needed a laugh at the time. If you feel like that at all, you’re going to want to read this. Just when you thought a topic might be something growing a little bit stayed, a little bit worn down, maybe something you thought you understood, Aspley gives us a completely unexpected viewpoint that makes it fresh and absorbing. This is a great book. I want to run up to people, shove it in their faces and scream, READ THIS RIGHT NOW! But I'd probably get arrested.
WHAT A FUN LOVE STORY
A quirky cast of characters supports an interracial love story full of humor, human imperfections, and hope. I loved this book and enjoyed reading about the zany adventures happening in the imaginary town of Granola, Minnesota.
This book is a jewel! I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt! Ms Aspley is truly a gifted writer!
